Reflective Clinical Supervision
What is Reflective Clinical Supervision?
Reflective Clinical Supervision focuses on the experiences a health professional has identified that they would like to reflect on from their everyday working life. This reflection can be of an encounter with a colleague a manager or someone they are supporting. The concept of Reflective Clinical Supervision is to explore the healthcare professional’s memories of that encounter and to identify things that they think may have been challenging, influenced by an internal or external bias, or even just how they themselves were travelling on that day. This reflection gives the healthcare individual information relating to how they managed the experience and how they might want to change the experience or the outcome if they were to experience a similar situation in the future.
It is important to note that Belinda undertakes her own Clinical Supervision on a four - six weekly basis via Teams with a Mental Health Clinician which she has been doing for over 15 years, and prior to that with other Clinicians as well.
How does it differ to Supervision offered by your employer?
You can undertake Supervision with your organisation, in addition to your personal professional supervision. Organisational Supervision can often be difficult to attend due to the competing demands of the setting within which you work. It may be offered as individual, group or not offered as they are unable to source a supervisor. Often individual’s find organisational supervision to be less reflective on their individual development as a professional and more on the group development, it can also be an inconsistent group as it will depend on who is working on that particular day.
What are the benefits of Supervision?
Clinical Supervision has been linked to decreased experiences of burnout, dissatisfaction with employment and greater confidence in their own skills. It helps individual professionals focus on their scope of practice and helps them to have an external individual support their growth.
